  3. INSTRUCTIONS

  5. WINDOWS 95/98 & later
  6.  
  7. To view this program contents simply:
  8.  
  9. * Insert CD in Drive.
  10.  
  11. * The program automatically starts.
  12.  
  13. If you have "Autorun" disabled or wish to start the program 
  14. manually:
  15.  
  16. * Insert CD in drive.
  17.  
  18. * Select "Run" from the "Start" menu. Type in "D:BEGIN.EXE".
  19. Omit quotes and replace the letter "D" with the appropriate
  20. letter for your CD drive (D is the most common).  Click "OK".
  21.  
  22. All software installation and launching is done through this
  23. "BEGIN" menu. Follow the on-screen directions.

  25. IMAGE BROWSER USE
  26.  
  27. The browser (Extensis Portfolio) is a program that allows you 
  28. to browse the catalog of images at your own pace, view them 
  29. full screen, and search image captions by feature or place 
  30. name. This software does not need to be installed onto your 
  31. computer. The Image Browser contains other features which you 
  32. may discover on your own or by clicking on the "Help" menu in 
  33. the program.

  35. * From the Main Menu, click on the "Image Browser" button to
  36. launch the browser.

  38. View Images Full Screen
  39.  
  40. * Left double-click on any thumbnail to view image full screen.
  41.  
  42. Play QuickTime Movies
  43.  
  44. This CD contains QuickTime video clips.  The thumbnails for the
  45. video clips are located at the end of the Image Browser catalog
  46. and have the word VIDEO in large letters.
  47.  
  48. * Left double-click on any video thumbnail to play the video clip.
  49.  
  50. Find/Search Captions in the Catalog
  51.  
  52. * Captions for each image are stored in the "description" field.
  53.  
  54. * To search captions, click on the "Magnifying Glass" button in 
  55. the tool bar. In the "Find" dialog box, type a word or words in 
  56. the search field (i.e. "Valles Marineris", or "Pathfinder") and 
  57. click on the "Find" button.
  58.  
  59. *To find all the images again, click on the "Magnifying Glass"
  60. button in tool bar, then click on "Find All" in the "Find"
  61. dialog box.

  63. Slide Show
  64.  
  65. The Image Browser allows you to view an on-screen slide show.
  66.  
  67. * Click on "Catalog" from the menu and choose "Slideshow" to 
  68. begin the slide show.
  69. * The bottom of the screen contains controls for the slide 
  70. show.  Hitting "ESC" or the "square" stop button will exit 
  71. the slide show.

  73. Catalog Views

  75. There are 3 different views in the image catalog.  The view that
  76. first appears when you open the catalog is called the "Record"
  77. view.  You may switch to the "Thumbnail" view or the "List" view
  78. by clicking on one of the three view buttons on the tool bar.

  80. PERFORMANCE TIPS

  82. Help
  83. The Image Browser's "Help" feature is optimized to use 
  84. Microsoft Explorer.  It also works with Netscape Communicator, 
  85. but runs slower.

  87. Monitor Settings
  88. The image catalog is best viewed with a monitor resolution 
  89. setting of 800 x 600 or higher.

  91. TO INSTALL SCREEN SAVER
  92.  
  93. * From the Main Menu click on the "Install Screen Saver"
  94. button.
  95.  
  96. To INSTALL QUICKTIME
  97.  
  98. Apple's QuickTime software is required for playback of narrated
  99. video clips in the browser.
  100.  
  101. * If you do not already have QuickTime installed, click on the
  102. "Install QuickTime" button from the Main Menu and follow the
  103. on-screen instructions.

  105. INTERNET RESOURCES
  106.  
  107. * On the Main Menu, click on the "Internet Resources" button to
  108. connect to additional information that compliments the CD.
  109.  
  110. * The "Extensis" website (www.extensis.com) may be reached by
  111. clicking on the internet address in the "Internet Resources"
  112. menu. It is full of great user tips, free upgrades and
  113. trouble-shooting tips for the browser (Extensis Portfolio
  114. Browser).

  116. WALLPAPER
  117.  
  118. Launch the Image Browser. Select an image. Go to the "Item" 
  119. menu and choose "Edit Orginal".  You will need to choose an 
  120. application to open the image. MSPAINT is a standard image
  121. viewer for WINDOWS 95/98, but any image or publishing
  122. program will recognize the image. To use MSPAINT, choose 
  123. "C:\Program Files\Accessories\MSPAINT.EXE". Once inside MSPAINT, 
  124. save the image as a "BMP" inside the "C:\WINDOWS" directory. 
  125. Open the "Control Panel" window and double click on the 
  126. "Display" icon. Click on the "Background" tab. Select the 
  127. image you would like, and click the "Apply" button.

  129. IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS

  131. * Images are in TIF format for your convenience.  They may be
  132. used in any image or publishing program that can recognize TIF 
  133. images.
  134.  
  135. * Images are located in the "Images" folder.
